Grade 2

In Grade 2, the main goals for the year are for the children to be able to add and subtract up to 20, to solve whole-part word problems, and to understand multidigit numbers.

During the first trimester, the children will first consolidate their ability to work with single-digit numbers and then learn how to work with the numbers from 11 to 20. They will understand the relation between a whole and its parts, and apply this knowledge to solve word problems having one action of addition or subtraction. They will finish mastering the addition and subtraction tables up to 10. They will review the concept of number as a relation between a quantity and a unit of measurement. (A quantity may be a length, an area, a volume, a mass, or an amount of separate objects.)

During the second and third trimesters, the children will extend their concept of number to the case where more than one unit is needed to perform a measurement. They will thus be led to discover the meaning of multidigit numbers. They will learn how to work with large multidigit numbers (up to thousands) from the very beginning. They will learn how to add and subtract not only base-10 (decimal) numbers, but numbers in any base (base-2, base-3, base-4, and so on). Their ability to work with multidigit numbers will be supported by a thorough mastery of the addition and subtraction tables up to 20.

By the end of Grade 2, the children will be able to:
- use diagrams and formulas to describe the relation between a whole and its parts;
- solve word problems having a single action of addition or subtraction;
- construct and measure a quantity using a given system of units;
- construct and measure a quantity using a unit, in a place-value number system having a base < 10;
- compare multidigit numbers in a given number system and represent them as a sum of place-value addends;
- compare numbers in different number systems, using the number line;
- read and write multidigit numbers (< 10,000) in the base-10 number system;
- reproduce, from memory, the addition and subtraction tables up to 20;
- perform easy oral calculations in the addition and subtraction of numbers up to 100;
